As part of our community outreach efforts, we partnered with the Well sisters at their local museum to help curate and enhance one of their exhibits. This collaboration gave us the opportunity to engage directly with our community and gain hands-on experience with local archaeological history. During our visit, we toured the museum’s exhibits and examined artifacts recovered from a local dig site — the remains of a house once owned by Nathaniel Bonnel, which had been destroyed by fire. If you're interested in local history and would like to see our work, check out the Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum in Chatham, New Jersey!
For this year’s theme, “Unearthed,” our team tackled the challenge of transporting fragile organic artifacts, especially rotting wood. After consulting local experts, we tested Play-Doh, plaster of Paris, and silicone for sturdiness, cost, ease of use, waterproofing, and effects. Play-Doh and plaster performed poorly, while silicone proved most effective but left residue. To solve this, we created a final solution: placing the wood in a plastic bag before encasing it in silicone, protecting it without causing damage.
